*WestStar TV brings OTT television service to Grand Cayman * Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 25-07-2012 Grand Cayman's WestStar TV is rolling out broadband service, and an accompanying over-the-top (OTT) television service to subscribers, enabled by Broadcast International's CodecSys patented multi-codec compression software. "Broadcast International is pleased to support a sophisticated OTT service in a less populated region," said Steve Jones, vice president and general manager of the CodecSys Division at Broadcast International. "Our CodecSys solution enables WestStar's subscribers to not only receive local content on their mobile devices, but connect with entertainment and informative programming from the far reaches of the globe - all on their own schedule. Access to OTT opens a whole new world to the smaller markets." Located in the capital city of George Town on Grand Cayman, WestStar TV is the only digital cable television service operating in the Cayman Islands. It offers entertainment, news, information, children's and sports packages. The organisation was first established in 1993 with two broadcast stations, CITN & CTS, and has since added the tourist information channel Discover Cayman and local broadcast station Channel 27, which produces high-quality local news, sports, weather, and cultural programming. Broadcast International will provide a comprehensive solution that includes CodecSys encoding and transcoding, as well as content management and development, integration services and Website development. The new service will permit subscribers to access a variety of programming as well as the local channels on mobile devices and PCs, and includes a Network Personal Video Recorder (NPVR) that allows content to be recorded and recalled at any time for up to two weeks. "This partnership allows us to offer our customers even more ways to access quality news, sports and entertainment in their time, on their terms," said WestStar TV vice president Jeremy Elmas. "We are extremely excited to make this announcement as we launch our Internet service and continue building out our state-of-the-art fibre-to-the home network."
