Mobile Internet usage on the rise in Germany Jörn Krieger | 04-09-2013 The number of Internet users is scarcely growing in Germany, but access with mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets is rising strongly, according to the new study ARD/ZDF-Onlinestudie by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF. 77.2% of people above the age of 14 use the Internet compared to 75.9% in 2012, an increase from 53.4 million to 54.2 million. This rise is solely attributed to the increasing number of people over 50 who have started to use the Internet. The highest jump from offline to online was made by people over 70, rising from 20.1% in 2012 to 30.4% in 2013. The time spent on the Internet has risen considerably too. In 2013, the German Internet user spent 169 minutes online per day on average, an increase of 36 minutes compared with 2012 (133 minutes). In addition, 5.3 Internet-capable devices can be found in the average Internet-user household. Tablets have gained popularity too: in 2012 they were only in 8% of Internet user households, now they can be found in 19%. Mobile devices have spurred Internet usage, with on-the-go access having risen from 23% in 2012 to 41% in 2013. 29% of Internet users have a connected TV set.
