Ecuador to export fibre to Latin America Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 28-11-2013 Ecuador will stop importing fibre for its telecoms industry and instead become an exporter, following the announcement that Telconet is to build Latham Fiberhome, the first fibre factory in the country, through a deal with the Chinese telecoms group Fiberhome along with state support. The factory will produce fibre for the national market and will try to cover some of the demand in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. The projects goes together with the polyethylene production in the country's oil refineries. "Almost all the raw material for communications will be produced in Ecuador," explained Jaime Guerrero, Ecuador's Minister of Telecommunications. The factory is planned to be the largest of its kind in Latin America and reinforces the increasing collaboration with China in the region's infrastructure. The Government intends to significantly reduce the material cost for local fibre Internet and TV providers, who currently rely on imports. Ecuador has been experiencing great growth in the telecoms market during the last year. The improvement in the country's financial situation is driving an increase in demand, and investments are making digital technologies available for a growing number of potential customers. "The country is moving towards a full digital society," said the Minister.
