Netflix challenge of overseas markets December 17, 2019 12.25 Europe/London By Julian Clover Netflix has released a breakdown of its subscriber numbers outside of North America. It’s the first time the streamer has made the information available. But the filing with the US Securities and Equities Commission shows a disparity between revenues in the United States and other continents. In the nine months ending September 30, 2019, Netflix boasted 67 million subscribers in the United States and Canada at an average of $12.36 per subscriber per month. Meanwhile, in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 47 million subscribers generated $10.26 million subs. The Asia-Pacific region produced 29 million subscribers at an average $9.31. But Latin America 29 million subscribers came at just $8.21. It’s clear the aggressive marketing plans in the United States and to a certain extent Europe where viewers are lapping up content in HD and Ultra HD has pushed average revenues higher. But there is already pressure from the Asia-Pacific region where the planned $3 mobile per subscription is unlikely to do the analysts any favours. Netflix is facing unprecedented competition in the form of Apple TV+, Netflix and Peacock, amongst others and in the second quarter recorded its first ever subscriber losses in the United States. The company has made it known that it doesn’t intend to make the regional breakdown a regular feature.
