bskyb (http://skytv.at/satsuk) is stepping up its efforts to recruit video-on-demand subscribers, signing a deal to make its Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) Player online service available via Humax's Freeview HD set-top boxes.

Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) is expanding Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) Player's distribution while continuing to lob heavy artillery at Project Canvas, opposing the BBC, ITV and BT-backed rival VoD service, which plans to launch on Freeview and Freesat, pending regulatory clearance by the BBC Trust and Office of Fair Trading.

Project Canvas aims to offer VoD content for free to Freeview and Freesat consumers with the right broadband-enabled set-top boxes or TV sets. Non- Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) customers need a monthly subscription to access Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) Player's live streaming and VoD content via Freeview or other platforms.

Today's deal with Humax, the UK's largest Freeview set-top box supplier, will put the Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) Player on the manufacturer's HD-FOX T2 box, launched in February, and its HD digital TV recorder, expected to be in shops later this year.

Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) has been busy expanding Sky (http://skytv.at/satsuk) Player's distribution aggressively in recent months, making the VoD service available to Xbox 360 users; and via Fetch TV and 3View Freeview broadband-enabled set-top boxes, and Cello's Freeview broadband-enabled TV sets.
