*RTÉ appoints new managing director of TV Tuesday, May 18 2010, RTE BroadcastingIrish public service broadcaster RTÉ has announced the appointment of Glen Killane as its new managing director of television. Killane, who has headed up RTÉ's sport operation since 2004, will start in the new role on June 1. He will succeed Noel Curran, who is joining RTÉ's executive board in a new capacity reporting to director-general Cathal Goan. "I'm delighted to be taking up the position of MD of television at such a critical time for RTÉ. The challenges are significant," said Killane. "However I'm very much looking forward to building on the achievements of Noel Curran and the TV Board and taking television into its next phase." Goan added: "Glen Killane takes up this important RTÉ leadership position at a time of continuing challenge and competitive pressure, leading a division which has great strengths in its people, its programming schedule and its tradition of strong public service television programming." Earlier in the month, a traditional Irish wake was held for long-time RTÉ broadcaster Gerry Ryan, who died of a suspected heart attack at his apartment in Dublin.*
