TCM, September 6 at 11pm: NYPD Blue creator David Milch tackles the Wild West with this classic modern drama series, getting a repeat airing as part of TCM's Western season.
Set in the frontier camp of Deadwood, the show follows a series of historical personalities as they try to build a functioning, civilised society from the mud and tents.
As the gold rush draws desperate adventurers from across the Americas to the town, a second wave of entrepreneurs arrives to provide the infrastructure that caters to the workers' needs - irrevocably changing the town, as the individualists and frontiersmen are supplanted by capitalists and corrupt government.
Timothy Olyphant stars as lawman Seth Bullock, whose plans to open a hardware store bring him into direct conflict with ruthless saloon owner, pimp and political mover-and-shaker Al Swearengen (Ian McShane, delivering a memorably foul-mouthed performance that banishes our memories of Lovejoy once and for all). Well worth a look.
