*Sky News iPhone app tops 2m downloadsFriday, October 1 Digital TV More than 2 million people have downloaded the Sky News application for iPhone and iPod Touch, the broadcaster has announced today. The downloads milestone comes as Sky News launches an updated version of the RTS award-winning app, which currently serves around 700,000 unique users every week.Downloads for the free app peaked at 200,000 per month in April this year during the general election campaign, when special extra functions were added. In July, there was another spike in download activity around the World Cup and the nationwide manhunt for fugitive gunman Raoul Moat.The app's latest version, launched in May 2009, has now been optimised for Apple's new iPhone 4, making use of the high resolution display and enhanced social features. Users can also now read pre-stored news stories while the phone is offline, and swap between black and white article text to suit their preference."As more of our customers use our services via their mobile devices, it's important that we continue to innovate and provide the best experience possible," said David Gibbs, Sky's general manager for mobile.Sky News executive producer for new media James Weeks added: "We're delighted that this app has been such a runaway success.
