Netflix takes on new Idris Elba comedy vehicle DetailsEditor | 22 April 2018 SVOD leader Netflix has announced a new straight-to-series original comedy created by, starring and exec produced by Emmy nominee Idris Elba, co-produced by Gary Reich and his Endemol Shine-owned Brown Eyed Boy Productions.Turn Up Charlie is set in London, and sees Elba as Charlie, a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who's given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend's problem-child daughter.Production for the eight, half-hour episodes written by Laura Neal, Femi Oyeniran and Victoria Asare-Archer begins in May 2018 in the UK, with a premiere date soon to be released. The series will be directed by Tristram Shapeero and Matt Lipsey with Gill Isles as producer. In addition to Elba and Reich, the series has Tristram Shapeero as executive producer with Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito as co-executive producers. Georgia Lester is supervising producer/writer. Netflix has slotted the series as one of its original productions for 2019.To the surprise of some, Elba honed his DJ skills long before finding fame on the big screen. His DJ career has included sets at the likes of Snowbombing, Glastonbury, Creamfields, and Elrow London; LA Sound with Skream; New York's Output venue; and a residency at was a resident at Hi Ibiza.
