Global RDK adoption rises to 60MN deployed devices DetailsJoseph O'Halloran | 19 March 2020 The number of RDK devices across the globe has grown by 10 million from the 50 million recorded a year ago with dozens of service providers across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia in various stages of evaluation, testing, trials or deployment. The figures were released by RDK Management and shows the continued acceptance of the open source software used to power customer-premise equipment (CPE) from broadband and video service providers worldwide. The software platform standardises core functions used in broadband, video and IoT connected devices. By standardising these functions, service providers can develop and deploy applications and services, independent of hardware platforms.RDK enables service providers to control their device diagnostics data, business models, and apps to improve the customer experience and drive business results. For the video industry, RDK provides common methods for a number of key tasks including managing video tuning, conditional access, DRM, stream management and diagnostics. Companies can also use the RDK App Framework to build and manage their own apps, choose an RDK Video Accelerator, choose a fully integrated IP set-top box and select an RDK pre-integrated app store solution. There are now more than 430 technology companies participating within the RDK community. Those with publicly disclosed deployment plans for RDK-based services include Comcast, Cox, J:COM, Liberty Global, Megacable, Melita, MEO, NOS, NOWO, Rogers, Shaw, SFR (part of Altice Europe), Tele Columbus, Vidéotron, Vodafone Germany, VTR and Ziggo.RDK expects to provide software in the coming weeks that will enable common methods to support live video feeds, continuous video recording, motion detection, and watermarking.“RDK now powers more than 60 million devices deployed by service providers around the world that require flexibility and control over their CPE software and diagnostics data,” said Steve Heeb, president and general manager of RDK. “The new RDK App Framework enables them to develop and manage apps easily, and RDK broadband software is capable of powering next-gen gateways across DOCSIS, DSL and GPON. Over the past year, the RDK community has been actively working to develop open source software for connected cameras, which we expect to make available soon, to provide a new avenue of growth for operators.”
